Sustainable Living: Sedum Green Roofs At The Bowers

At Hillstone Homes, we place great importance on carefully sourcing the materials used throughout our developments to ensure quality as well as sustainable living. This is no exception at The Bowers, an Award-Winning collection of four detached three storey homes located in Rochester, with balconies offering panoramic views across the surrounding Medway towns. Features include underfloor heating, expansive floor to ceiling glazing and carefully considered layouts that maximize natural light.

Sustainability

We have incorporated sustainable features such as air source heat pumps, LED lighting, and smart lighting/heating to ensure our homes are both environmentally responsible and future ready for modern living. These systems help the homeowner to manage energy use more effectively throughout the home and encourage sustainable living.

Partnering with Harrowden

A key sustainability feature at The Bowers is the use of green roofs for both the houses and detached garages, which helps minimise environmental impact. To achieve this, we partnered with specialist company Harrowden to install Sedum Green roofs. These roofs provide natural insulation against both noise and temperature fluctuations, helping to enhance the energy efficiency of your home. They also support the surrounding environment by:

  • Helping to manage rainwater and reduce the risk of flooding
  • Filtering pollutants from the air
  • Creating valuable habitats and food sources for local wildlife

Every sedum mat is seeded with up to seventeen different sedum varieties, grown outdoors for up to a year before installation. Each plant is chosen for its disease resistance, drought tolerance, long flowering period and enviable good looks. The matting is made using recycled materials and products. It is strong and easy to install, whilst also carefully designed to keep the growing medium within the mat.

As the used sedums are drought-tolerant, they only need to be watered occasionally during extended periods of dry weather, ensuring minimum maintenance.
